Suffixes -ence/-ance

Suffixes can change the way a word acts. In this unit, you learned the words “intelligence” and “independence.” They are both nouns that talk about a “state of being …” – intelligence is the state of being smart, and independence is the state of being free. These words can be made into adjectives by changing the suffixes ence/ance to ent/ant. Fill in the chart below with the correct adjectives.

Now fill in the blanks with the correct adjective or noun.
  1. Susan has high intelligence. She is very __________.
  2. Jim and Jack are different. What is the __________?
  3. Why were you __________ from class? Your __________ is hurting
    your grades.
  4. I asked my teacher what the __________ of this test was, and she said it was __________ because it counted for half my grade.
