Be going to and will are both used to talk about the future, but they are not always used for the same kinds of actions. Look at the charts.

Planned action:

I will go to the beach on Sunday.

I’m going to go to the beach on Sunday.

Spontaneous action:

Those boxes look heavy! I’m going to help you carry them.

Those boxes look heavy! I will help you carry them.

Promise:

I’m going to call you when I arrive in Chicago.

I will call you when I arrive in Chicago.

Request:

Are you going to drive me to the bank, please?

Will you drive me to the bank, please?
