Grammar: Present Tense Be Verbs

The be verb shows the state of being. We must use the be verb to talk about many things.

For example:

what someone/something is:

what someone/something looks like:

what someone/something is doing:

where someone/something is:

man, student, Chinese, thirty years old.

beautiful, colorful, dark, small

studying, reading, playing, talking

in class, at home, on the desk

*Affirmative and Positive are used in the same way.

The present tense be verbs are am, is, are

  • Affirmative (+) subject + be verb I am …
  • Negative ( – ) subject + be verb + not You are not …
  • Question (?) be verb + subject Are we … ?
