7 – Pronunciation: Intonation

In spoken English, we use intonation to add additional information to the words that are spoken.

Intonation can tell the listener several things: whether a sentence is ending, or if it’s just a pause between clauses, whether it’s a question or sentence, what type of question it is, or even the speaker’s mood.

Here are some basic rules:

A. Listen to the statements from the listening exercise. Pay attention to the intonation and mark the intonation of each sentence.

B. Listen to the audio again and practice saying each sentence. Pay attention to your intonation.
