5 – Pronunciation: Identical Nouns & Verbs

You learned in the previous exercise that some words in English have the same noun and verb forms. For some of these words, even though the spelling is the same, the pronunciation is different. Example: insult (noun) insult (verb)

A. Listen to the example from the dialogue.

Example: insult (noun) insult (verb)
In the noun form, the stress is placed on the first syllable. In the verb form, the stress is placed on the second syllable. Listen again and repeat after the speaker.

B. For the list of words below, the noun forms place stress on the first syllable and the verb forms place stress on the second syllable. Listen and repeat each form.

C. Now listen and mark whether you hear the noun or verb form for each word.
