Soft /j/ if followed by ‘y’, ‘e’ or ‘i’*.
Examples: endangered, giant, energy, general, gypsy, geometry, gin
*Note: As usual with English, there can be exceptions: girl, gift, tiger, gear, get, geese
Hard /g/ if followed by any other letter, or nothing.
Examples: big, frog, green, gun, gas, go
