10 – Building Terms & Expressions

Part A: An excellent way to build vocabulary is by learning word families. An understanding of how words can be used as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs lets people be more expressive when they speak or write. There are several terms and expressions from this unit that have more than one part of speech. Look at the chart below. Try to list the additional parts of speech for the words given.

Please note that many words have forms not commonly used in English today. The chart below focuses on the more commonly used forms that students will find more practical.

Part B: Look at the words from the chart. Try to come up with meanings for the new parts of speech you listed. The part of speech you need to define is under the blank in the sentence. The first one is done for you. Click on “next” at the bottom of the page to see suggested answers. Please note that your answers may be slightly different.
